Axel Springer profits from overseas expansion

Axel Springer, the "picture" - and "world"-publisher could submit in the first half of a strong result. Thanks to the Group but not the national print media.

For in this segment fought Axel Springer in the first half of the year with declining revenues. The strong growth has been achieved elsewhere, namely in the digital and the international (Print) media. To jump recently acquired a new women's portal in the UK. The aim of the new business focus to become more independent is to make use of the developments in the domestic print market. "Axel Springer's digital and international activities are not the only driver of growth, but also now contribute nearly 40 percent of the total operating result in," announced Springer chief Mathias Doepfner.

Total earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) in the first half of 289 million euros, a rise compared to last year by ten percent to a historic high. Not so with the net profit: He was in the first half declined by eleven percent and fell to 151 million euros. Reasons for this have not yet been named.

Revenue increased by twelve percent, to nearly 1.53 billion euros and thus met the expectations of analysts. With 53.4 percent controlled the international print media at the largest contribution to sales growth, digital media, with 30.3 percent, the second largest. The national print media, however, experienced declining advertising revenues, was responsible for the especially strong prior-year quarter, which benefited from the football World Cup.

For the current year plans the MDAX companies increased sales in the single digit range and an Ebitda increase in the low double digits.

The investors are extremely satisfied with the figures presented, the Springer shares traded today, with more than six per cent more than biggest winner in the MDAX.

Competitor ProSiebenSat.1 will report its quarterly results on Thursday, followed by the RTL Group on 24 August.
