Average monthly wage - the lowest in Europe

Average monthly wage is calculated based on average wages in the public sector, due to lack of data on wages in the private sector. The average salary in the public sector in Kosovo, according to December 2011 of the Statistics Agency of Kosovo, is 368 euros.
Director of Social Policy in Kosovo Statistics Agency, Bellaqa Union, said on Radio Free Europe that the average salary in the public sector from 2007 to 2011 increased to 169 euros (84 percent).
Connoisseurs of economic affairs have demanded that wages be determined based on the price level, as in Kosovo, the ratio between price and wage level is too high. They noted that the average wages in Kosovo are low, not even enough for a dignified life.
Compared with the regional countries, like Albania, Macedonia, or Montenegro, according to director of the Department of Social Statistics, Bellaqa Union, Kosovo has the smallest average wage in the region.
With a decision of Government, public sector wages were increased in 2011. Under this decision, which entered into force on 1 January 2011, employees in public sector wages have begun to rise from 30 to 50 percent.
Executive Director at the Institute for Advanced Studies (GAP), Agron Taurus, says Radio Free Europe says that after this increase of wages in the public sector had been rising consumer prices and a host of decisions of the Government of Kosovo, which have affected this average salary not reflect the increased purchasing power.
Also, the Law on Value Added Tax, which was approved in 2008, according to Bull, favors those who have higher wages, and charges those who have lower salaries. He also points out that not everything depends on government policies, because Kosovo has an open economy and a high trade deficit and any movement of prices in international markets affects prices up in Kosovo.
"All this makes this level of salary is too low and do not cover even the basic cost of living in Kosovo," says Demi.
Otherwise, the latest data published by the Kosovo Statistics Agency show that the consumer basket shtrenjtua for about 3 percent in January, compared with the beginning of last year, while in comparison with December, the items necessary to Consumer shtrenjtuan to 0.7 percent.
